There are many things in our waking physical life that are quantifiable, that allow us to gauge how much or how less of something could be beneficial for our well-being. Now, imagine if there was a way wherein we could measure aspects of ourselves that are traditionally deemed non-quantifiable, such as our emotions.

Luckily, thanks to a brilliant man, Dr David R. Hawkins, MD., PhD, psychiatrist, physician, spiritual teacher and researcher, such a marvel exists in the world. In his books, Power vs. Force and The Map of Consciousness Explained, Dr Hawkins introduced the ‘Map of Consciousness’ which outlines different emotions in an individual and measures them on a scale of 1-1000, the lower levels resonating with emotions such as shame and guilt which cause suffering and higher levels resonating with enlightenment and ultimate consciousness.

Understanding consciousness

To understand this map of consciousness, we have to first understand what is consciousness. Consciousness is the awareness of internal and external stimuli. This can be referred to as spiritual recognition, cognitive awareness, psychological understanding or modern-day concepts such as self-actualisation and life purpose. Therefore, the higher our state of consciousness, the better we are at understanding life and its functions in our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual worlds.

Another aspect that is extremely crucial to understand in this context is the concept of frequency and vibration. Everything in our existence, starting from a water bottle, furniture to animals and us human beings, are made up of atoms and molecules that vibrate at a certain frequency. Thus, our vibration can be measured by the frequency we are in and to raise our level of consciousness, we have to raise our vibration. The saying, “your vibe attracts your tribe” might make a lot more sense now.

The Map of Consciousness

In Dr Hawkins’ ‘map of consciousness,’ he presents the different emotions, measured in hertz (Hz), the unit measurement of frequency, in an inverted-style pyramid. The lower-level emotions in the map begin at the alpha state, which includes Shame, that resonates at 20 Hz, Guilt at 30 Hz, Apathy at 50 Hz, Grief at 75 Hz and Fear at 100 Hz. These emotions are lowest in the spectrum and cause an individual to live in a constant state of suffering, vulnerable to being manipulated and taken advantage of, as they are subconsciously dictated by these emotions.

Following this, the next state consists of emotions such as Desire, which resonates at 125 Hz, Anger at 150 Hz, Pride at 175 Hz and Courage at 200 Hz. These states are the ‘getting by’ states of emotions wherein individuals are deeply rooted in their ego-consciousness and ‘me’ always comes before ‘we.’ It is interesting to note that alcohol, also called liquid courage, resonates somewhere around 200 Hz, the frequency of courage. These two states of consciousness, ‘suffering’ and ‘getting by,’ are highly contracted and limit the growth of an individual on all levels.

The next state on the map is neutrality, which resonates at 250 Hz. This is roughly where the majority of the human population is estimated to be situated on the scale of consciousness. As the name suggests, this is a state of living in a neutral zone where we are away from suffering, sort of getting by, but have not yet attained that flow state of living in our waking lives.

Moving up on the scale, the next set of emotions include ‘Willingness,’ which resonates at 310 Hz, Acceptance at 350 Hz and Reason at 400 Hz. These emotions are the gateway to the flow state and higher consciousness living, where we start to accept our primary role as the co-creators of life to find our true purpose and meaning. It is to be noted that marijuana, which is a very spiritual plant that has a consciousness of its own, resonates somewhere around 350 Hz, the frequency of acceptance. This could be one of the possible reasons why people who are ‘high,’ experience an altered state of being as they are accessing higher states of consciousness.

Love, which resonates at 500 Hz, Joy at 540 Hz and Peace at 600 Hz is at the next level of consciousness. These emotions represent living in the true flow state, leading to pure tao. It is a very expanded state of consciousness, and individuals in this state are deeply connected to their soul purpose and mostly work to provide for the highest good of all beings. It is a state that is usually devoid of ego-consciousness and works its way towards unity consciousness.

The following state of enlightenment, which resonates at 700 Hz to 1000 Hz, is the state of ultimate consciousness i.e. the omega state, where we are connected to source consciousness. Buddha was vibrating at this frequency and thus, attained enlightenment. It is said that even if one person can attain the level of 700 Hz or higher, they can raise the vibration of millions of people around them and across the globe.

It should be noted that the word ‘waking life’ has been used in the article several times. This is because, to expand our state of consciousness and to be the happy co-creators of our reality, we have to be aware of our emotions when we are physically awake and alert. It is important to become attuned to noticing our actions and behaviour as and when they occur so we can get a better understanding of where we can find ourselves in the scale of consciousness. At first, this might seem harrowing or impossible, but with a little discipline, self-motivation and practice, we can easily become an objective observer of our emotions and rise higher for a better, more aligned version of ourselves in all areas of our life.

It should also be mentioned that it is normal to move up and down this scale and experience different emotions as we go through different phases in our lives. However, with improved awareness, we all have the ability to maintain a state of peace, love and joy, to live a happy and fulfilling life.

Thanks for the great article! I’ve used this scale and others like it before. This is one of the better explanations I’ve seen of what each level means and the potential impacts they can have. Imagine what the world would be like if more people lived at the highest frequencies :)

We’re glad you like the article! Yes, we’ve been using this scale to better ourselves too, and if everyone was living in a high vibrational state, the world would definitely be a very different place. However, we’re positive that slowly but surely we’ll all get there :)
