Spirituality might at times seem like a heavy term, but in its essence and experience, it is as light as a feather.

I recently read somewhere that we are made of both matter and consciousness. Thus, to be healthy in all aspects of our life- physical, mental, emotional and spiritual- we have to pay attention to all these different factors in our system. For example, the way we eat healthy and nutritious food to take care of our physical body, similarly, we must adopt practices that help us take care of our spiritual nature.

Spirituality: My understanding

For me, spirituality first and foremost, means connecting with my inner self and getting to know who I am at the soul level.

It is also a way for me to connect with the divine powers that be-god, the universe, any name works. And, the way I connect with the higher powers, is by having faith.

I have faith that the universe we live in, is grand and expansive and that we are here for a reason. Life is meant to be fully lived so that we can learn and integrate the lessons here at ‘earth school’ (as many spiritual people like to call it) and move on to higher dimensions of existence.

Spirituality: One essence, different facets

Spirituality is not a one-size-fits-all concept. What might work for one person, might not be a good fit for another. For example, we can be spiritual in numerous ways, including praying, meditation, yoga, exercise, dancing, cooking, singing and by performing various other activities that promote our well-being.

Yes, there are of course tools and techniques to attain certain levels of mastery in this practice. However, spirituality in its essence, is all about being one with the creator, being present in each and every moment we experience and, living life to the fullest.

How to practice spirituality?

When one wants to experience spirituality in any form, the ego and thinking mind have to be kept aside for a while, as overthinking and analysing things continuously can prove to be a major hindrance in this process.

The world we live in today is full of many such distractions and stressors that deter us from being present in the moment. We are continually either thinking of how the past is still affecting us, or how the future might impact us and because of this, we lose out on the moment we are in now, the present.

Therefore, to feel this bliss, one has to be silent and aware. When we do not force anything in our existence, have surrendered to the present moment and are grateful for being alive, that is when we are spiritual. If we can just be, that is practising spirituality. It’s that simple.

So, what is spirituality in one word? Being.
